Sonia Balazovjech

Founder & Director 

Sonia Balazovjech is the founder and director of the Sonia Balazovjech Dance Company, and has been a kindergarten teacher with the Lester B. Pearson School Board for over twenty-seven years.

Her dance journey began as a gymnast, competing at a national level and later mentoring future prodigies. Upon retiring from active competition Sonia began intensive training in classical ballet at École Dansart and studied closely with Vaganova-trained teacher Maria Abdul Malek. Simultaneously, Sonia preserved her ties with the gymnastic world, continuing to choreograph floor routines for numerous athletes, including - but not limited to - the Canadian national team in preparation for both the Olympics and World Championships.

In the summer of 2010, Sonia took the step to found her namesake company. Since then, this unique endeavor has allowed a diverse community of dancers to continue high-level training and performance whilst pursuing their individual education and professional careers. While a “human-first” approach, the SBDC collective nurtures a multidisciplinary pool of talent that collaborates to create engaging productions that, in return, raise valuable funds and awareness of local charitable organizations.

She strives to continuously push creative boundaries and elevate the performance quality of SBDC productions with the support and collaboration of her team. This commitment to innovation contributes to the growth of the dancers and provides audiences with enriching experiences that are uniquely signature to SBDC.
